The unique objects from the ghetto in Majdan Tatarski in the deposit of the State Museum at Majdanek

         On August 26-27, 2010 the Institute of National Remembrance – Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation deposited a set of objects in the State Museum at Majdanek. The objects had been found in 1988 during construction works in the area of the former ghetto in Majdan Tatarski. >>>

A workcamp project at the Memorial Site. Volunteers in the State Museum at Majdanek

         A workcamp project at Memorial Site is a form of education combining a possibility to learn about the history of Majdanek concentration camp with a phisical work as an active contribution to the Museum. During two weeks, between 14-28 September, 2010, volunteers from Poland and Germany took part in a series of lessons, workshops and presentations organised by the Museum as well as were making restoration works in the historical areas of former concentration camp. >>>

Repair works in the State Museum at Majdanek

         The State Museum at Majdanek is currently carrying out the second stage of the largest investment programme within the last thirty years, i.e. the renovation works of roads and pathways in the whole area of the museum. So far the road along the exhibition barracks has been renovated and so has the car park next to the entrance to the exhibition. Moreover, Prisoner Fields IV and V have been surrounded by a new pathway. This year the road and pavement leading from the car park to the crossroads with the Road of Homage and Remembrance will be covered with a new surface. The road across Prisoner Field III, which is a part of the visiting route, will also be repaired. >>>

Voice of the Youth – international project at Majdanek

          On August 21, 2010 the State Museum at Majdanek started an international educational project entitled Voice of the Youth – international exchange for Shoa memory. The workshops have been organized by the Museum in cooperation with The Well of Memory Association within the framework of the programme financed the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. >>>

The State Museum at Majdanek hosted His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomeo I of Constantinopole

         On August 20, 2010 Państwowe Muzeum na Majdanku the State Museum at Majdanek hosted His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomeo I of Constantinopole.  At the Mausoleum, where the ashes of the murdered are laid, the Patriarch laid flowers and paid tribute to the victims by saying the prayer for their intention.  He also learnt about the history of the concentration camp at Majdanek and visited the crematorium and made an inscription in the Memorial Book of the Museum. >>>

New acquisitions in the Archives of the State Museum at Majdanek

         A few days ago original materials documenting the fate of one of the prisoners were donated to The Archive of the State Museum at Majdanek. These are mainly secret messages sent from prison, and subsequently from the concentration camp at Majdanek. They were written by Stanisław Boroń, brought to Majdanek from Kolomyia at the beginning of February 1943 in the first transportation from Lvov. So far the State Musuem at Majdanek has only had a card from the Polish Red Cross files with his name. >>>

The announcement of the Management of the State Museum at Majdanek in Lublin

         At night between 9-10 August 2010, from yet still unknown reasons, on the grounds of the State Museum at Majdanek the fire broke out in one of the historical barracks (a former kitchen on Prisoner Field 3). The building has been almost complately destroyed. A large amount of the prisoners’ shoes deposited there have also been burnt. A quick response of the Museum security and effective action of the fire brigade prevented the fire from spreading to further historical objects.  >>>

Historical and didactic contexts of commemorating victims of Nazi crimes – educational seminar for students from Cologne

         Dialogue with the past and memory of the past may become more fruitful and creative if they are held in authentic historical places. Visiting such places combined with project participants’ independent work opens new opportunities for exploring the past.

         This kind of active way of experiencing the history has been chosen by the students of the University of Cologne during the seminar organized in Lublin and other memorial sites in the Lublin region by the Majdanek Department of Education between July 24 and August 1, 2010.

         The event entitled ‘PhotoDay in State Museum at Majdanek’ took place on November 21st, 2009. The Majdanek concentration camp was a venue of an outdoor photography event organised by ‘Moje Miasto Lublin’ paper. The aim of that event was to interest Lublin’s citizens into history of that place, which, between 1941 and 1944, was functioning as one of the biggest concentration camps in Europe. >>>

Between May 19 and October 31, 2010, the Documentation Center shows the exhibition "The Track. The Logistics of Racial Mania". Voice of the Youth – invitation

         The State Museum at Majdanek and The Well of Memory Association would like to invite to take part in educational project entitled Voice of the Youth – international exchange for Shoah memory, which  will be held between August 21 – 30, 2010 in Lublin. The participation is free of charge. Organisers cover costs of accommodation and board in Lublin, travel to memorial sites in Bełżec and Sobibór, and 90% reimbursement of travel expenses to Poland. >>>

History and remembrance. A seminar for the volunteers of Action Reconciliation Service for Peace in the State Museum at Majdanek

         Between June 27 and July 2, 2010, the Department of Education of the State Museum at Majdanek and the International Youth Meeting House in Oświęcim organized a historical seminar whose aim was to familiarize the volunteers of Action Reconciliation Service for Peace with the course and consequences of German occupation in the Lublin region. In September the volunteers from Germany who took part in the project are starting their service in museum-memorial sites, institutions commemorating the victims of the Second World War and social security centres in Europe and the USA. >>>

Peer education. The students from Poland and Germany in the Museum at Majdanek

         One of the most important postulates of historical pedagogy is the activity of the addressee of the memorial site. Peer education is a form of activating youth in a place commemorating the victims of terror. The participants of the project are trained to be guides around the historical exhibition and after that they take an active part in discussing selected aspects of Majdanek’s history.
 
         This form of getting acquainted with the history of the concentration camp in Lublin and the lives of its prisoners was chosen by the students of Domschule Schleswig and the students of Stefan Czarniecki XLVI High School in Warsaw, who visited Majdanek on June 17, 2010.

Photography exhibition in School Complex No 5 in Lublin

         In April 2010 the Department of Education of the State Museum at Majdanek organized an educational project entitled “The living memory of Shoah” for the students of School Complex No 5 in Lublin. A photography workshop, which was a part of the project, aimed at encouraging the participants to look for their own ways of discovering the history of KL Lublin. The final product of the students’ activities was the photos taken in the area of the State Museum at Majdanek. The space and the surviving relics of the former camp became the starting point for facing the tragic history of its prisoners. >>>

Preserving the memory – Polish and German workcamp in the State Museum at Majdanek

         The authentic memorial sites, which witnessed the tragedy of thousands of people, provide the visitors with a unique possibility to cognitively communicate with the past and actively associate with the relics. The didactic postulate of activating the memory of the past is carried out by engaging students in educational classes which have the form of historical workshop. This way of learning about the history of the concentration at Majdanek was chosen by the students of Realschule in Lemgo and Mikołaj Kopernik High School No IX in Lublin. >>>

Leonardo programme in the State Museum at Majdanek

         For the last three months our museum has hosted Lydia Görlitz from Germany who is a trainee within the framework of Leonardo da Vinci programme financed by the European Union. From March till June 2010 she was engaged in the works of The Department of Education, preparing educational materials for German-speaking groups. Her work focused on the trial of the Majdanek crew members in Düsseldorf in the years 1975-1981. >>>

Topography of extermination. A study trip of the youth from the Georg Büchner School in Darmstadt to the Lublin region

         From March to June 1942 more than 15,000 German Jews were deported to the Lublin District. Most of them were killed during the ‘Operation Reinhardt’ in death camps in Bełżec, Sobibór and the concentration camp at Majdanek as well as transit ghettos including the ones in Izbica, Piaski and Zamość.

         Between June 3 and 6, 2010 a group of German youth from Georg Büchner Schule in Darmstadt, from which deportations to the Lublin District ghettos and the Nazi death camps took place as well, visited the places related to the tragic fate of the Jews deported to the Lublin region. The aim of the project was for the students to learn about the Topography of Extermination and commemorating its victims. >>>

         In 2009 the State Museum at Majdanek prepared a publication presenting the educational offer of the Museum. This publication, destined for teachers and for all who are interested in taking part in educational activities organised by the Museum, contains a range of practical tips and useful information.          On 19 April Poland celebrates The Holocaust Memorial Day. The extermination of Jews was an unprecedented crime in the long history of humanity. The Lublin region became one of the main areas where the Nazis committed genocide acts against thousands of Jewish children, women and men. The Jews died as a result of hunger, terrible living and sanitary conditions, hard work, executions and extermination in death camps. >>>

A subsidy for the conservation of a part of Museum's textile collections

         The State Museum at Majdanek informs that it received a subsidy from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage on the basis of the decision dated February 4, 2010, following the application submitted in the first recruitment in the Department of the Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage within the framework of the program “Cultural Heritage – Priority 2: Supporting museum activities”. The subsidy is 100,000 Polish zlotys and it is going to be spent on a project called “The conservation of striped jackets, luggage badges and dolls”, which was prepared by the Department of Collections. The project will be funded with the money received from the Ministry of Culture and the museum’s own means. >>>

         Stimulating students during educational activities, enabling them to learn about history by discovery and individual work is one of the basic tasks of the Museum’s pedagogic activity. Historical practice for students is one of the forms of active education in the Majdanek memorial museum. The issues that students deal with are connected with different aspects of Nazi ideology, the history of concentration camps, as well as the consequences of the Second World War and the forms of commemorating the victims of the Third Reich. >>>

        Within the framework of social and political education the Lubelskie region was visited by a group of youth from Österreichische Gewerkschaftsjugend, which is one of the biggest organizations in Austria. The main purpose of the study tour around memorial sites in Poland was acquiring knowledge about the history of the extermination of Jews in the museums commemorating this fact.>>>

Celebration of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day

         On January 27, 2010 the State Museum at Majdanek organized a celebration of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. During the Second World War Majdanek became one of the extermination centres. 60 thousand Jews died here. They came mainly from Poland, but also from Slovakia, the Chech Republic, Germany and Austria. >>>

Educational classes: The history of KL Lublin: memory – dialogue - future

         For a long time Polish-German historical workshops have been an important element of cross-cultural social and historical education carried out in the State Museum at Majdanek. Apart from popularizing the history of the concentration camp at Majdanek, the main purpose of such projects is shaping the modern culture of remembrance about the victims of the World War II in the European context. The cross-cultural dialogue and mutual work of young people from different countries in a place marked with a tragic history create a unique opportunity to communicate and break stereotypes and mental barriers. >>>

         The publication is devoted to the World War Two biggest Nazi genocidal operation whose code name was „Erntefest” (“Harvest Festival”). On November 3rd and 4th 1943 German Nazists murdered around 42 thousand Jewish prisoners in the concentration camp at Majdanek, the Trawniki and Poniatowa labour camps and a couple of smaller camps in the Lublin District. >>>

German plans to colonize the occupied Middle-Eastern Europe historical workshop

         On 22-24 November the students of Magdeburg School of Applied Sciences attended the classes organized by the Education Department of the State Museum at Majdanek. The classes were devoted to the main objectives of the German occupation and extermination policy in the Lublin district in the years 1939-1944. The agenda included a visit to the concentration camp at Majdanek, learning about the history of Lublin in the context of Nazi occupation, working in the archives and taking part in the historical workshop devoted to the German colonization and Germanization plans contained in the Generalplan Ost.>>>

         On November 3, 2009, for the anniversary of operation „Erntefest", the conference entitled: „The history and remembrance of the extermination of Jews in Lubelszczyzna" was held. The conference was organized by the Association „Studnia Pamięci”, the Institute of Culture and History of Jews UMCS and the State Museum at Majdanek

          On the very same day, in the State Museum at Majdanek, for the homage of the victims of operation "Erntefest" the flowers were laid at the monument commemorating the events on November 3, 1943. >>>

         On October 23, 2009 the Education Department of the State Museum at Majdanek organized a class for a group of students from Stefan Czarniecki High School in Warsaw and Otto Hahn lower secondary school in Göttingen. The class was based on the idea of peer education and involved engaging the students in giving tours around the museum exhibition. >>>

A former prisoner, Jan van Kuik from Netherlands visited the State Museum at Majdanek

        On 13-14 October, 2009 the State Museum at Majdanek had the honour to host Mr. Jan van Kuik, a former Majdanek prisoner. After visiting the exhibition and the area of the museum, Mr. van Kuik went to the Museum Archives, where he looked into the documents connected with his imprisonment at Majdanek. He also gave an account of his experiences in the camp. >>>

         On October 19, 2009 the Education Department of the State Museum at Majdanek organized a methodical and educational seminar for teachers and other educators interested in extracurricular historical education in memorial sites. The classes were attended by lower and upper secondary teachers from Lublin, Świdnik and Wąwolnica and the representatives of the Social Education Centre at the “Happy Childhood” Foundation. >>>

         In the context of the generation change and the fact that the witnesses of history are passing away, the role of camp relics, both artifacts and archives, as the carriers of historical memory is increasing. The relics not only visualize the past but also constitute the source of knowledge about it. What is more, the atmosphere they create and the fact that they are authentic and unique are conducive to “experiencing” history in a more interesting way. >>>

         Classes for international groups are an integral part of the Museum’s educational offer. Within the framework of student exchanges, many schools from Poland and Germany carry out projects devoted to the history of Nazism on the basis of the history of the former German concentration camp at Majdanek. The Maria Curie-Skłodowska V High School in Lublin and Gesamtschule in Schermbeck, North Rhine-Westphalia are the Museum’s active partners. >>>

An encounter with history: children’s camp life stories

         Between September 29 and October 7, 2009 the students of Hugo Kołłątaj V High School in Lublin took part in the project entitled „An encounter with history: children’s camp life stories”, which has already been carried out several times. During the workshops carried out in the Museum at Majdanek the students discovered the lives of Polish, Belarusian and Jewish children: Henio Żytomirski, Halina Birenbaum, Piotr Kiriszczenko and Janina Buczek.  >>>

The visit of diplomats from 46 countries in State Museum at Majdanek

         On September 26, 2009 the State Museum at Majdanek was visited by the group of diplomats from 46 countries. The guests, in majority in the rank of ambassadors, with accompanying persons, came to Majdanek Museum during their tour around Lubelszczyzna region, organized by the local state and self-government authorities with the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  >>>

The 6th Lublin Science Festival in the State Museum at Majdanek

         It is the fourth time that the State Museum at Majdanek has taken part in the Lublin Science Festival, which is a prestigious popular science event that has been organized in Lublin since 2004.          On July 27-31 the Education Department of the State Museum at Majdanek in cooperation with the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oświęcim and Action Reconciliation Service for Peace has organized a historical and educational seminar for volunteers from Germany who are soon going to start working in museum-memorial sites and other institutions that deal with commemorating the World War II victims as well as social welfare centres in Europe and the USA. >>>

The 65th anniversary of liquidation of the concentration camp at Majdanek

         Georg Büchner Lower Secondary School in Darmstadt has the tradition of organizing study journeys to the memorial museums in Poland. They are part of extracurricular historical and civic education, the purpose of which is reflecting on the past in the context of Nazi crimes, commemorating the victims of National Socialism and shaping civic attitudes in a spirit of democratic values. >>>

An appeal for financial help

         Through the agency of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, the State Museum at Majdanek has made an appeal to the former camp prisoners living in the USA and their families for financial support. The means which the museum is going to obtain this way are going to be allocated for furnishing the conservation laboratory and adapting two camp barracks for exhibition halls: one of the barracks is a former shoemaker’s workshop, where victims’ shoes were sorted, and the other one is a women’s bathhouse, were Jewish women and children were selected for gas chambers. >>>

Inventory works in the area of the former camp

         Between April 21and May 19, 2009 the Department of Collections took the inventory of the sanitary appliances, the remnants of the barracks in Fields I, II, IV and V, drains and hydrants. A volunteer from Austria, Johannes Köppl helped with the work. >>>

         On 14 May, 2009 the third form lower secondary students of John Paul II School Complex No 4 in Krasnystaw participated in a museum lesson devoted to the lives of children in Majdanek. The classes dealt with such issues as: the reasons why the children were brought to the camp, living conditions and profiles of individual children representing the groups of underage Jewish, Polish and Belarusian prisoners. The youngest members of society became just the same victims of the III Reich’s policy as adults. >>>

         67 years ago in Józefów, Zamość region,Reserve Police Battalion 101started its criminal activity. It was sent to the Lublin district within the framework of the operation called „Sonderaktion Polen”. Between July 1942 and November 1943, when the plan of exterminating Jewish population was being carried out, the battalion took part in executing 38 thousand Jews and deporting 45 thousand Jews to the Treblinka death camp in such places like Międzyrzec Podlaski, Kock, Parczew, Końskowola, Radzyń, Łuków i Lublin. The history of the battalion and the crimes they committed have been described by an American Holocaust historian Christopher R.Brownig in his book Ordinary Men. Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland.>>>

         The Holocaust Memorial Day, celebrated on April 19 in Poland, is dedicated to the remembrance of the Jews who were murdered during World War Two. In the long history of genocide, the extermination of Jews is considered to have been an unprecedented phenomenon. The Lublin region became one of the main areas were the Nazis killed hundreds of thousands of Jewish children, women and men. Jews perished as a result of hunger, disastrous living and hygienic conditions, hard work, executions and extermination in death camps. Thousands of victims had been brought to so called transit ghettos before they were murdered in the gas chambers of Bełżec, Sobibor and Majdanek. >>>

         On March 11, 2009 students from Germany, Italy and Poland took part in a historical workshop in the State Museum at Majdanek. Their visit to the Museum was a part of an international Comenius project entitled „Shoah”, which was carried out by schools from Rottweil (Germany), Thiene (Italy), Radzionków (Poland) and School Complex No 10 in Lublin (the host of the visit). >>>

         The website of the State Museum at Majdanek has opened a new section of on-line publications. It will contain articles in PDF format and source studies devoted to the issues of German occupation in the Lubelskie region, with special attention paid to the history of the concentration camp at Majdanek and the death camp in Bełżec. The series starts with an extremely valuable source, namely radiograms concerning the number of prisoners at Majdanek. They were found in one of the British archives a couple of years ago. Educational programme: Traces of Holocaust in Occupied Poland

         A group of young people from Österreichische Gewerkschatsjugend organization from Vienna arrived in Poland within the framework of social and educational education. They made a study journey to the places connected with the extermination of European Jews. The part of the programme, which was carried out in the Lublin Province between January, 31 and February, 2 concerned one of the issues that was essential for the history of Holocaust: the construction and functioning of “Aktion Reinhardt” camps (Treblinka, Bełżec and Sobibór). >>>

         The cooperation between the State Museum at Majdanek, Maria Curie-Skłodowska High School in Lublin and Gesamtschule in Schermbeck brought another fruitful common venture. Between January, 26 and 28, Polish and German students took part in a historical workshop devoted to the history of the concentration camp at Majdanek. The programme of the workshop included the classes concerning the German occupation of Lublin, workshop classes in the museum and a meeting with Ms Ewa Kozłowska, a former prisoner of the concentration camps in Majdanek and Ravensbrück. >>>

 

Ceremonies and conference for the commemoration of 65th anniversary of Erntefest

          A ceremony was held on 3 November to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Action „Erntefest”. The ceremony was devoted to 42 thousand victims of mass executions, who were the prisoners of the concentration camp at Majdanek and forced labour camps in Lublin, Trawniki and Poniatowa. The executions took place on 3 and 4 November 1943. >>>


Symposium Facing Oscar Hansen’s Open Form - Adam Spychała exhibition

        Lublin Fine Arts Association (Lubelskie Towarzystwo Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych) and Kont Gallery kindly invite you to Adam Spychała’s exhibition entitled Clues to Our Past and Future Existence, which is held at the State Museum at Majdanek.Spychała is a student of Lublin Technical University and his project assumes interference with the existing space of the former concentration camp on the basis of Oscar Hansen’s Open Form. Hansen’s 1958 design of the Auschwitz monument was the starting point for the young architect. The exhibition consists of three parts, which include photographs, a multimedia projection  and architectural design on boards.>>>

New maps for the museum exhibition

         The museum has recently been cooperating with the Cartography Department of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University to produce the maps entitled: “The Lublin Region under the German Occupation. Camps – Prisons – Ghettos in 1939 – 1944” and „Lublin during the German Occupation in 1939 – 1944”. The works have been finishedand from the new season of 2009 the maps will be presented at the permanent exhibition in barracks 45.>>>

Commemoration of Jewish children from the Lublin orphanage, who were murdered in March of 1942

         On 23 September, 2008 a ceremony commemorating the execution of Jewish children from the Lublin orphanage was held. It was prepared by the Israeli Beth Shemesh secondary school, situated near Jerusalem and the XVIII Secondary School in Lublin. The ceremony was preceded by a meeting of the Isreali and Polish students, during which they told each other about their lives and taught each other their traditional songs and dances. >>>

         Between 1 and 10 October an educational project entitled „An Encounter with History: Children’s Fate at the Camp” took place at the State Museum at Majdanek. The first grade students of Hugo Kołłątaj High School in Lublin took part in it. The classes in a historical place like the former concentration camp are a form of extracurricular education, which is a great chance to meet the past and reflect on the tragedy of the Second World War and its commemoration. >>>
